Saugatuck High School has been fortunate enough to have many great alumni. After they leave, there is often a void, especially when it is someone who: People who had so much school spirit, was a friend to everyone, a dedicated student, a band member, people that respected others including teacher’s, and people who everyone wanted to be around. A Saugatuck alumnus that meets all this criteria is Kyle Beery, class of 2011.

Kyle Beery is a name that everyone in Saugatuck High School would know. He was such a school spirited kid, and would go to every Saugatuck sporting event. He even started the Blue Crew. Blue Crew is a cheering section that cheers during basketball games. He would get everyone pumped up before games by running up and down the court holding a flag that had the Saugatuck ‘S’ on it, painted his chest and fast, and would were a body suit. Not only was he really into his school spirit, but is also very close to his hometown, Saugatuck.
Kyle faced some challenges throughout his life due to his heart condition, which made him unable to play contact sports. That motivated him even more to excel in all the other activities that he had the opportunity to participate in. Baseball was one sport that Kyle could play. Kyle played second base and always had a spinning-the-bat routine when he was at the plate. Kyle never let his heart condition slow him down and was an inspiration for all.

Kyle is now a freshman at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is majoring in journalism; he is interested in doing something with sports journalism, maybe even broadcasting. His favorite class last semester was a First Year Seminar class about hidden meanings in fairy tales, and his favorite so far this semester is about electronic journalism. College was a big change for Kyle. Being far away from home was tough at the beginning but now he loves it. He plans on going four years of undergrad at , and probably nothing after that, at least not for a while.
Saugatuck has missed his enthusiasm during basketball games and getting everyone pumped up, but we’re glad that Butler gets to have such a great guy to do the same there.

Kyle is in the Dawg Pound student section and he tries to attend all the games that he can. At the basketball games he plays in the band, just like in high school.
According to Kyle, college has its pro’s and con’s. Kyle also think’s college is better than high school, but he cherishes his years at SHS. Kyle says, “ My favorite thing about college is my freedom and all the time I have. My least favorite thing would have to be how far away from home I am.” He really misses Saugatuck sometimes. Other times he’s just glad to be away, but he never knew how much the small town meant to him.

Band was a big part of Kyle’s life. He played it throughout high school and is continuing to do so at Butler. Playing in the band is different for Kyle because it’s at a Division 1 school, but at the same time it’s similar. It’s really laid back and not very stressful. “The director is really funny like Mr. Holtz,” Kyle says, “ But I don’t think I’m going to do marching band next fall. Just stick to basketball band.”

“The biggest thing that I miss is my friends that I grew up with and just knowing absolutely everyone I go to school with,” Kyle says , “Butler University is a small college, but there is still a lot of people.” After just joining Lambda Chi Alpha (fraternity), he’s sure he’ll get that sense of friendship and the small-town feel back. Kyle also misses high school football games.

Kyle is remembered by all young and old at Saugatuck because of what he accomplished during his school years. We all will remember him from the Blue Crew, the band, Saugatuck baseball, but more importantly from just being an all-around great person to all the people he came in contact with.
